It’s like watching a normally happy person turn passive after someone treats them poorly and they just accept the negativity as true.
My feelings toward Vestine are about as close to hate as I ever get, which is saying something. Everyone deserves a chance at redemption, maybe several if they make any effort, but right now I just want to see her pulverized into a smear on the pavement.
You are already forgetting the “epistruct[ure]s” on page 316. Lisa hasn’t had a full “reset to factory settings”. In current technology, the foreground app has been reset but that’s all. Vestine should have had an “oh SHİT” moment when Lisa said she remembered the massacre: if she remembers that, what else does she remember? Her personality is defined by her experiences, her memory of them, and her evaluation of them—look at how her character has developed from early automaton to full-on kick-ass a few pages back. The first two attributes are still intact; her intelligence is there too., so the evaluation will return. If I were Vestine, I’d keep her well away from the butter knife.

At worst, Lisa is able to do anything she’s not expressly told not to do. And retains the memories to work with that.
